Bon Iver: An Artist of a Generation

An Artist of a Generation Carter Ross In 2006, singer and songwriter Justin Vernon retreated from his previous life to a snowy cabin in Wisconsin to recuperate from a series of heartbreaks and illnesses. In 2007, comprised of songs written and produced while in his isolation, Vernon released the independent/alternative album For Emma, Forever Ago under the newly created band Bon Iver. Since this eventful winter, Vernon and Bon Iver have skyrocketed into popularity, releasing two new albums and an EP, all to critical acclaim, and amassing nearly a billion total streams on Spotify alone. I first learned of Bon Iver when they released their third studio album, 22, A Million , in 2016, and ever since then, they have been my all time favourite band. It is due to this that I believe that Bon Iver is one of, if not the, best bands of this current generation. While it is true that music is subjective and ultimately up to the listener's taste, there are many music critics and musici...

Free Tuition

Free Tuition Carter Ross The average Canadian pays over $6,500 in tuition for post-secondary education, with some students paying up to $20,000 depending on the field in which they study. In Canada, the minimum wage is $12.65 per hour, meaning that even when working full time, which is already difficult to manage while attending school full time, the average Canadian student is spending a quarter of their yearly income on tuition when working at minimum wage. As the cost of rent continues to rise throughout British Columbia, it is becoming more difficult each year for young adults to pursue a further education. A solution for this problem is to make college and university tuition free in the province of British Columbia. This idea is not new, it has been a topic of large debate over the past few years, especially during the recent political race over in America. In 2017, US Senator Bernie Sanders detailed his plan to remove tuition and fees at public colleges and univers...

Bike Lanes

Bike Lanes Written by Carter Ross Ever since their introduction in 2017, Victoria’s protected bike lanes have been grounds for controversy and debate.  The bike lanes are often criticized for removing options for parking, a problem that is already very present in downtown Victoria, as well as making right turns impossible in several locations. The project also reportedly cost upwards of 6 million dollars, a price tag that is frequently brought up in conversations bashing the project. Those who are for the bike lanes think differently, however, claiming that the lanes will reduce greenhouse gas emissions, helping to combat climate change and that the effects on motorists are either inconsequential in relation to the problems it hopes to solve, and will in response drive more citizens to take up cycling. I, for one, understand both sides of the argument and find myself sitting in the middle of the two groups. I understand the gravity of climate change and believe that anyt...

Captivating News

Captivating News Carter Ross – 1/23/19 As of the last few years, news has become a lot more global and more and more shocking news from around the world has been grabbing our attention whether we like it or not. With the rise of Donald Trump and his presidency, every day seems to be filled with another insane story. Due to this increase in news coming from America, as well as social and political unrest around the world I am finding myself paying attention more now than ever. As I am more interested in global issues than the issues of my hometown, I find myself getting my news from more global sources such as on the internet. I do not watch news networks on the TV such as NBC, CNN etc. as I find a lot of the television networks to have biases that can dramatically affect the quality and believability of their content. Instead, I get most of my news online, through articles posted on social media platforms like Reddit or through online news shows such as the Philip DeFran...

NWC Rehires Laid-off Employees

News Release NWC Rehires Laid-off Employees FOR RELEASE: January 16 th , 2019, 9:00 AM VICTORIA: The National Widget Company is announcing a restructuring today that will result in the rehiring of 200 previously laid-off employees, 50 of which from Victoria.             The National Widget Company, Canada’s oldest widget manufacturer, announced the laying off of 200 employees late last year after the actions of a competitor had begun to drive the company out of the widget market. However, due to a dramatic increase in widget sales, the company hopes to reach out to and rehire all of the previously laid off employees within the next six weeks.             This increase in widget sales stems from many sources. Previously, the widget was primarily used in the oil business, however recent discoveries have led to the installation of the widget into residential constr...
